Pastor Russ’ Reflections…
Dear CLC Friends,
Just as the farmers and vineyard owners around us complete their harvest of grain and grape, apples and avocados, so we also, with thanksgiving, bring the fruits of our labors to the Lord.
This coming Sunday, Nov. 9th, at worship and at the Stewardship luncheon following, we will be emphasizing the blessings we have received from the hand of God this past year as well as God’s dreams for Christ Lutheran in 2009. We will also be hearing from our presiding Bishop, Mark Hanson via DVD. And the Stewardship packets will be distributed at the luncheon. Our pledges of time, talent and treasure will be received the next Sunday, Nov. 16th.
Despite the recent global economic downturn, it is important to continue our strong support for the church, both financially and with our time. Christ Lutheran has been exceptionally blessed with active and generous members. Remember how we raised over $20,000 in a matter of a few months for our new organ? We have just launched a $3000 fundraiser for a new roof for the Ark and to replace tile on the sanctuary and I have no doubt those monies will be in before Christmas. Members are answering the call to assist with our children’s ministry, our property and worship needs, and our expanded cooperative ministry through SALT. Several new proposals are in the works for the coming year. You are invited to be a part of God’s growing work among us.
So, I hope to see you this Sunday. It’s harvest time!

Coming soon—THE BOOK OF FAITH: Open The Bible and Join the Conversation
The Book of Faith Initiative (BFI) is a major effort by the ELCA “to invite the whole church to become more fluent in the first language of faith, the language of Scripture, in order that we might live out our calling as a people renewed, enlivened, empowered, and sent by the Word.” The BFI is embraced by SALT (Serving As Lutherans Together) and endorsed by the CLC Parish Planning Council.
Let’s face it: many of us don’t know our Bibles very well. And yet, the Bible is central to the faith of all Christians. The language of the Bible shapes how we think and speak about God, the world, and ourselves. We are renewed, enlivened, and empowered as Scripture forms and shapes our hearts, our minds, and our mission to our community and the world.
Help is on the way! The ELCA has recently produced several new Bible Study resources. This January, Pastors Truls Person (Trinity), Lynn Bruer (Grace), and Russ Gordon will team teach a study entitled “Rediscovering the Book of Faith” in round-robin style at each congregation. “Rediscovering” explores how the Bible came to be, with sessions on the Old Testament, the New Testament, and translations of the Bible.
and, look for a first-ever Lutheran Study Bible available in Spring, 2009.
Save the date of Saturday, February 7 when Dr. Diane Jacobson, Professor of Biblical Studies at Luther Seminary and Director of the BFI for the ELCA, will be with us to present a review of the Old Testament. Our goal is then to form numerous small Bible Study groups throughout Goleta/Santa Barbara made up of members and friends of Christ, Grace, and Trinity Lutheran congregations. We will be seeking and training small group leaders for this ambitious yet important effort.
Watch for further information over the next month and prayerfully plan on being a part of the Book of Faith Initiative!
